Indigenous publishers have been winning big this year—Magabala Books won Small Publisher of the Year at the 2024 Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIA), and Huia Publishers won the Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year for Oceania at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Join Eboni Waitere (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne), Director at HUIA and Bebe Oliver (Bardi Jawi) Director at Magabala Books in Australia as they speak to the role of industry recognition and taking Indigenous authors to the world.
EVENT UPDATE Due to extenuating circumstances, this event will no longer take place. We are exploring presenting this kōrero in a podcast format for a 2025 release. We encourage you to attend other events in the festival with connecting themes, such as Story Sovereignty as Living Practice: Trans-Tasman Edition, featuring Bebe Oliver, and From Inception to Print, Uninterrupted: All about self-publishing. You can also check out the day of free events at Te Auaha (Sat 9 Nov) featuring a host of Indigenous writers and artists.
